Marks drawing capabilities showed at age 12 - students at an art course refused to believe he had free handed and not traced work. At about 20 he was hung at Mosman Art Prize - [ their second show - a total of about 30 entries - all hung ! ] At this time he experimented with acrylics, which wasn't common then, using sample tins of acrylic house paint !
Due to family commitments he did little art for some 35 years and restarted in the late 90's. He did a 1 year course at evening college to learn the basics. Mark made a decision to work in oil pastels [ no, not crayons ] Why ? Not too common. The art teacher knew little about oil pastels but was impressed enough to buy one of his works.
Mark has developed his own methods using this medium. [ Little is written about oil pastels ] The only other study he has done is through Art Society demonstrations. He thanks the 3 societies he is in for their help and encouragement. He also now does major works in ink - unusually drawing in ink on canvas ! He does not use any form of tracer and only uses his own observations, sketches and photos for inspiration, no other images.
An interesting strategy employed is the use of reverse perspective - he imagines how it would work and allows the concept to control the results. He also uses concave and convex perspective , creating some unusual images. A major aim is to record historical subjects - houses, buildings, streetscapes, outback objects etc rendered artistically, not architecturally. Circa today.
Mark has been gratified for receiving awards including " Best in Show ", " Firsts", and many VH, H, commendeds.
He was also a finalist in the City of Sydney Villages Art Competition, with his 400 x 400 mm drawing enlarged to 1200 x 1200 mm and displayed on street furniture throughout Sydney for 6 weeks.
